How Epic Star repairs microwaves in Los Angeles

Microwaves are unique among appliances: their high-voltage section (transformer, capacitor, diode, magnetron) stores lethal electrical charge even when unplugged. This is why microwave repair is one of the few categories we explicitly recommend against DIY. A failed magnetron can sometimes be safely replaced; the door interlock and control board work are routine for trained technicians. But discharging the capacitor without proper PPE is a real-world hazard.

Built-in vs countertop economics

For countertop microwaves under $250 retail, repair rarely makes economic sense — replace and recycle. For built-in microwaves (Wolf, Thermador, Miele, GE Monogram, Bosch drawer, Sharp drawer), where replacement runs $1,500–$5,000+ and installation may require cabinetry rework, repair almost always wins.

Wolf and Sharp drawer microwaves

Drawer microwaves are increasingly common in premium Westside kitchens (under-counter installation, no microwave above the range). Wolf MD24/MWD24 and Sharp KB-6524PS are the dominant units. We service both, stocking common parts (door switches, drawer mechanisms, magnetrons) in our service van.

Frequently asked questions

How much does microwave repair cost in Los Angeles?

Most microwave repairs cost $150–$450. Door switch replacement $180–$280. Magnetron replacement $280–$450 (parts plus labor). Touch panel / control board $280–$450. Built-in and drawer microwaves typically cost 20–30% more than countertop or OTR units due to harder access. $85 service call waived with completed repair.

Is it worth repairing a microwave?

For countertop microwaves under $200 retail: replacement usually wins. For built-in microwaves (Wolf, Thermador, Miele, GE Monogram, Sharp drawer units — $1,500–$5,000+ replacements): repair almost always makes sense. For OTR microwaves attached to range hoods: depends — replacement requires removing the unit, sometimes worth doing to refresh aesthetic match.

Do you repair Wolf drawer microwaves?

Yes. Wolf drawer microwaves (MD24, MWD24) are premium units common in Beverly Hills and Bel Air kitchens. Most common issues: drawer mechanism (door switch), magnetron failure, control panel. Wolf parts ship from Sub-Zero Group warehouses — 2–5 day lead times for non-stock parts.

Why is my microwave sparking?

Stop using it immediately and unplug it. The most common cause is the waveguide cover (a small mica or plastic panel inside the cavity) is burned through or food-soiled. Continued use damages the magnetron and risks fire. Waveguide cover replacement is a $150–$220 repair if no other damage has occurred.

Is microwave repair safe to DIY?

No. Microwave ovens contain high-voltage capacitors that store lethal electrical charge — sometimes 4,000+ volts — and retain that charge even after unplugging. Discharging these capacitors safely requires specific procedure and PPE. Microwave repair is one of the few appliance services we strongly advise against attempting DIY.

How long does microwave repair take?

Most repairs take 45–75 minutes on-site for countertop and OTR units. Built-in microwaves take 60–90 minutes due to access. If we need to special-order a part (common for built-in Wolf, Thermador, Miele units), the unit may be out of service for 3–7 business days.
